Happy New Year!!! New Year’s Eve 31st December 2008


I noticed a hot girl sitting on a table across me.  I thought its fun trying to picking her up, to kill time, while waiting for Jackie, but I couldn’t think of any good pick up line and dismissed the idea.

Jackie and I were planning to go watch New Year fire work in the city tonight, Jackie is late he told me via a text message, I ended up waiting for him in front of Central Train Station’s Hungry Jack.

Jackie finally arrived.  “Sorry, man.” He said he wore a black T shirt.

“Hey man, what’s up.” I said

“So, you bring any girls?” Jackie asked.

“Na, man” I said

“What about you, where’s your girl friend?” I continued

“She’s back in China for New Year.” Jackie said.  Jackie and his girl friend are Chinese oversea students, they met in Australia.

“Hey, I called two friends of mine to join us, hope you’re OK with it.” Jackie said

“Sure” I said

I never understand why Jackie always say he is lonely, every time we hang out, he managed to bring along more people, most of the time, people I don’t even know and different people just about every time.

It took us a while, to find Jackie’s friends David and Paul, in front of a Central Station’s entrance/exit, near a male toilet.  David and Paul are Koreans, they wore white T shirts.  Paul wears glasses.

We had to get to Darling Harbor, where the firework is, but all trains to nearby stations stopped, due to over crowding, so we walked.

I am not sure when, but I think by the time we got to Town Hall, the cops had the road sealed off from the cars, for pedestrians.

The government organized celebrations only exist in Darling Harbor, but the party has extended beyond it and we found ourselves within the party, still miles away.  There were lots of people in the city that night and a lot were walking, towards Darling Harbor, most in their late teens or twenties.  Every time, I saw a group of girls that’s worth picking up and wanted Paul to be my partner, he chicken out, so I have to chicken out too.

“Come on man.” I said, after the third time Paul chickened out.

“You are just here to pick up chicks aren’t you?” Jackie joked

“It’s just a bit of fun, New Year.” I said

“I’ll be your partner.” David said

“Yeah, David is out going.” Jackie replied

After a while, we saw a girl, standing on the sidewalk, checking her mobile.

“That one looks good.  You want to go pick her up.?” I said

“Ok,” David said

“Ok, let’s go.” I said

“You serious?” David asked

“Yeah, of course, let’s go.” I said

David and I pretended to be tourist, asking random people for direction and that girl with the mobile is that random person. 

David and I walked towards the girl acting confidently, Jackie who can’t join us because he has a girl friend and Paul who chickened out again, waited behind a convenient store.

“Hey, can you tell us the way to Darling Harbor, buddy?” we said, the girl probably didn’t hear us and didn’t respond.

So, David and I kept walking, until we reached a distance bit away from the girl.

“No response!” We burst into laughter.

I guess the girl didn’t have a clue what was going on, she was still looking at her phone listening to her walkman.  David and I walked back towards Jackie and Paul.

“What happened?” Jackie asked.

“No response” we laughed.  We started walking towards Darling Harbor again.

The crowd become thicker and thicker, a second of carelessness and you will be lost from your mates, the street was all lighted up, every once in a while, you hear people yelling “Happy New Year” or coming up to you, wishing you a happy new year, we always replied positively.

The local bars, Seven Eleven and MacDonald were jam packed with people.  The streets were full of people celebrating, there were a happy atmosphere all over the city and just about everybody were having a good time. 

“I lost everybody.” I heard a girl said

“Where the hell are Paul and Jackie man.” I asked David, when we finally lost them. 

“I don’t know.” David replied, we started looking for Jackie and Paul, we couldn’t fin them and decided to keep looking for them and use the chance to pick up girls.

“What about that one.” David said there was a red head girl, wearing an orange jumpsuit checking her camera, standing a bit away from us.

“Look cute.” I said

We decided that I will tell her that David wanted to take a picture with her for New Year good luck and see how we goes from there, but by the time David and I completed our strategy discussion, the girl already finished checking her camera and was starting to walk towards another direction.

“Man, where is she going.” David said

I started laughing, then David started laughing too, we dismissed the idea of picking up that girl.

“How are you my horny friends?” Jackie and Paul walked up from behind us, a few minutes later.

“Where the hell was you guys?” I asked

I can’t remember Jackie’s reply.  We started waling towards Darling Harbor again.

By the time we reached Darling Harbor, it was sealed off, due to over crowding.

We choose a spot, with a good view of midnight’s firework and sat down, along with hundred and thousands of people, who didn’t get into the harbor.  After a little while, we decided it’s still early and went to a bar nearby.

The bar was jammed packed with people and it was so noisy, I can barely hear myself think.  The bar owner putted plenty of chairs and tables on the sidewalk and a lot of people choose to enjoy their drink outdoor.  The sidewalk was jammed packed.

I saw a hot dog stand nearby, considering Jackie was buying everybody beers, I decided to get everybody hot dogs.  I thought the hot dogs would be at most, two dollars and fifty cent each, but it was five dollars each!!!  “What a rip of!!!” I thought

We started chatting amount ourselves and enjoy the occasion’s atmosphere.  There was a group of young people walking down the main road, yelling on the top of their lungs “Happy New Year.  We love you all!!!” as they walked along

Nobody is sure who they are, but everybody yelled, happy new year in return.

There were a few couples, making out in public, without revealing any part of their body, other then their heads.

By the time it was Eleven o’clock, we decided to find a sweet spot to watch the midnight firework.  It took us, half an hour to find a spot.  There were twice as much people sitting there.

“Hey, isn’t she that girl we wanted to pick up earlier today?” I said to David, pointing to a girl wearing orange jumpsuit, she was with another black hair girl wearing the same cloth.  They were taking people’s photos, with permission.

“Yeah, I think she is taking photos of people.” David said

“I’ll go ask her, when she come by.” I said she was still taking photos of another group of people.

Once she finished, she and her friend started jogging up the road, towards the direction we were in.  I ran over.

“Hey, are you guys taking photos of people.” I asked

“Yeah, would you guys like one.” The girls smiled

“Sure.” I said

The girls ran a few steps to where, Jackie, David, Paul and I were sitting.

The four of us scrammed together, Jackie was on the left, I was on central left, David was on the central right and Paul was on the right.

“Say cheese.” The black head girl said.  She snapped the picture.

“Ok, now you join in.” we said, the red head girl jumped into the frame between Jackie and me

The black hair girl took two photos.

“Ok, now its, my turn.” The black hair girl said, hanging the camera to her friend and jumped into the frame.

The red hair girl took a photo with only the four of us guys and one with her friend amount us.

Then we returned to our sweet spot, to wait for the firework and the girls left to take more photos.

It was twelve o’clock and the firework is about to begin.

“10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 Happy New Year!” The crowd yelled.

The firework began, there’s a big difference between watching it on TV, then been here.  On TV, you are watching from a remote location, but here, it’s all around us.  It’s a beautiful piece of art work.

The firework eventually ended, I wish it lasted longer.  The army of people that swamped into the city all night is now, heading back to their shelters.

Standing in front of a local bar’s window, a DJ kept the part going, mixing music for the public.  A lot of people stopped to watch, every once in a while, the DH threw flying kisses into her audience.  She is hot.  I guess she is in her early twenties.

We reached Town Hall and parted with Paul, who lives in the city.

Jackie, David and I walked into the train station.  We’re on different platforms.  We said goodbyes and split up.

“Enjoy life when you still can, tomorrow, you will be facing all the shit life throws at you in 2009.” I thought
